TAking up space

This collection examines the history of the Urban Renewal Movement and its long-term impact on African Americans. Grassroots organizations such as the Emergency Committee on the Transportation Crisis (ECTC)and their efforts to counteract this movement will be highlighted within each garment. Though these opposition groups emerged in the 1960s, I will create a small timeline of events that explain the need for urban revitalization in the first place.

word in motion hat

This hat was inspired by my fashion illustration within the journal, composed of eviction notices, land trusts, city plans, and newspaper clippings reflecting the relentless circulation of documents that dictated the displacement and disenfranchisement of black communities during the urban renewal movement
